Het meten van flow, ook wel doorstroming of debiet genoemd, wordt gedaan om te kunnen bepalen hoeveel vloeistof of gas er door een leiding of open kanaal stroomt. Flowmeters zijn er in vele verschillende meetprincipes en uitvoeringen, afhankelijk van de toepassing. Zo moet een flowmeter voor lucht of gassen rekening houden met de samendrukbaarheid daarvan. Bij een hogere temperatuur zetten gassen uit en is de flow per inhoudsmaat gelijk, maar de exacte flow in gewicht dus eigenlijk minder. Bij debietmeters voor vloeistoffen heeft de temperatuur veel minder effect.
