By measuring light intensity in a building, you can automatically turn on lights when it gets too dark. Conversely, of course, you can also turn lights off when they are not needed, thus saving energy as well. Another application of brightness meters, also called lux meters, is to control blinds. By placing a luxmeter on each side of a building, you can determine on which facade the sun is shining at that moment and how strong.
A completely different application is checking the output of solar panels. For this, a luxmeter is less suitable, but there are special solar energy meters. By comparing the potential energy calculated with the solar energy meter with the actual energy generated, you can quickly detect defects and contamination of solar panels.
